Description of Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG):

Polytetrahydrofuran (PolyTHF), also know as Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG), is a white waxy solid. Polytetrahydrofuran will turn into transparent liquid when the temperature is higher than room temperature. Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) dissolves easily in alcohols, esters, ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon chlorides. However, Polytetrahydrofuran doesn’t dissolve in water or fatty hydrocarbons. 

When its molecular weight increases, Polytetrahydrofuran solubility drops. At room temperature, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) is a good absorbent of water depending on its molecular weight and maximum up to 2%. Pharmaceutically, with its good anticoagulant activity, Polytetrahydrofuran (PolyTHF), or Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) can be used as medical macromolecular material.

Polytetrahydrofuran Explained

Polytetrahydrofuran, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG), also called poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol or poly(tetramethylene oxide), is a chemical compound with formula nOH2 or HO-(-(CH2)4O-)n-H. Polytetrahydrofuran, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) can be viewed as a polymer of tetrahydrofuran, or as the polyether derived from 1,4-butanediol.

Polytetrahydrofuran, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) is commercially available as polymers of low average molecular weights, between 250 and 3000 daltons. In this form it is a white waxy solid that melts between 20 and 30 °C. Polytetrahydrofuran, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) can be processed further into polymers with molecular weights of 40,000 and higher.

Polytetrahydrofuran, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) is sold under various trade names including Terathane from Invista and PolyTHF.

 

Applications:

The primary use of Polytetrahydrofuran, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) is to make elastic fibers like spandex for stretchable fabrics and for polyurethane resins. The latter are polyurethane prepolymers dissolved in solvent. They are all widely utilized in the production of artificial leather. These elastomers are either polyurethanes made by reacting Polytetrahydrofuran, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) with di-isocyanates, or polyesters made by reacting Polytetrahydrofuran, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) with diacids or their derivatives.

Synthesis of Polytetrahydrofuran, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG):

olytetrahydrofuran is popularly synthesized by acid-catalyzed polymerization of tetrahydrofuran. The starting material is natural gas, which is converted to acetylene, then reacted with formaldehyde to make butynediol and then butanediol. The latter is turned into tetrahydrofuran by action of a catalyst and then polymerized.

Handling and Storage:

Poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol, Polytetrahydrofuran, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) is hygroscopic and will degrade if it is exposed to oxygen or air. That is the reason why it should be well-sealed with dry nitrogen.

Poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol, Polytetrahydrofuran, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) is a white, waxy sold at room temperature, but it will become a clear, colorless liquid when heated.  If Poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol, Polytetrahydrofuran, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) has solidified in the drum, it could be melted by holding the drum at about 70 for about one day. Avoid localized heating however.  For storage in the liquid state, Poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol, Polytetrahydrofuran, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) is recommended to maintain temperature at less than 50 degrees.

Poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol, Polytetrahydrofuran, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) 650 and 850 are classified under the Japanese Fire Services Act as hazardous materials, Class 4, Petroleums No.4, Hazardous Rank III.  Volatility is low, and Poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol, Polytetrahydrofuran, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) is unlikely to catch fire at room temperature.  But if it is burning, extinguish the fire with dry chemical, alcohol-resistant foam, or large quantities of water.  Although Poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol, Polytetrahydrofuran, Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) has relatively low toxicity and is relatively safe, do use standard protective equipment like goggles and gloves when handling it.

Storage and Transportation:
